In an interview with MovieMaker Magazine, Pattinson talks about how important the detective element of the Batman character is to the film. Related: What The Batman’s DC Comics Inspirations Reveal About The Story The Batman's comic inspirations were revealed to be Darwyn Cooke’s Batman: Ego and Other Tales, Jeph Loeb’s Batman: The Long Halloween, and Frank Miller’s Batman: Year One, strongly hinting at a detective story. The Batman seems to be leaning heavily into the detective aspect of the character, pitting the dark knight against the Riddler, whose look has a lot of similarities to the Zodiac killer. While the film is still expected to deliver the big, massive action of a traditional superhero movie, it appears it will be very different from the past Batman films before it. While that element of the character has remained important, it has often been overlooked in big-budget film versions of the character in favor of more traditional superhero action. Introduced in Detective Comics #27 in 1939, Batman has often been described as the world's greatest detective, and many of the character's early adventures had more in common with Sherlock Holmes than Superman. Robert Pattinson says the talk around The Batmanbeing a detective story is an important part of the narrative.
